President Obama is canceling the deployment of the Missile Defense System (MDS) in Europe. Bush had pushed for the installation of this system despite the fact that the technology has never been successfully tested. The Bush plan called for an installation of the system in Poland and the Czech Republic, but the project has resulted in strained relations with Russia.

This has been a black project - a term for military/defense projects that the government, military and defense contractors keep secret - and has been a total failure. Only a rudimentary version of what is envisioned overall for the program has ever been produced and many physicists say it will never work

This was a Cold War project that has been a financial black hole for the military industrial complex since the inception of the project in the early years of the Reagan administration. It has cost taxpayers over $120 billion, currently more than $10 billion per year, and is nowhere near completion. The money could be better spent in so many other areas.
