| The
Plutocracy of America
For Which It Stands
During October, 2005, in the middle of Bush's
Reign Of Error, Citigroup's top management sent a memo to its richest
investors declaring America is now officially a plutocracy: A Society
Ruled Exclusively By and For The Richest One Percent of the Population.
This tiny percentage of the people controls more of the country's
wealth than the bottom 95 percent combined. This is no longer a
true Democracy – it's the land of the rich.
All Americans participating in our society deserve the
opportunity for a decent standard of living with a job at a living
wage and an affordable home, healthcare, a high quality eduction,
vacation time and a comfortable pension for old age.
This is not, by any means, a new idea. FDR's proposed Second
Bill of Rights included these concepts in 1944. Unfortunately, Roosevelt
passed away before the end of his term and his proposal was never
passed.
However, the concept of a job at a living wage and an affordable
home was implemented as The Greatest Generation went on after World
War II to build the America we enjoy today. But now, with the intensified
corporatization of the country, the American Dream is apparently
dissolving as big money dominates the government to the detriment
of our citizens.
Ironically, FDR's concept was adopted by many other countries
and it is employed to this day. Japan and Germany were among the
first to receive these rights, which were also adopted by Italy
and France, Korea, most of Europe and Scandinavia. Americans are
among the very few that don't enjoy these benefits among the richest
countries in the world, and we're the people who paid the costs
for rebuilding the countries of our enemies after the war.
Roosevelt offered a basic plan for the security and prosperity
of all Americans. His proposed Second Bill of Rights laid out basic
rights necessary for any civil society. They included the opportunity
for a citizen to have a useful job with sufficient pay to provide
a decent standard of living for a family at fair prices for goods
and services.
Roosevelt also believed that businesses should be able
to operate in a free atmosphere without unfair competition or markets
dominated by monopolies. Towns and cities should provide the governance,
security and the infrastructure required for a modern society, and
families should have a decent home, good healthcare, a free education
and parks and recreation facilities. The elderly, who have paid
taxes their entire lives, should be relieved from economic fears
with pensions and healthcare and without bankrupting taxes and fees.
These are not financial issues: they are moral issues.
The democracies around the world first adopted these policies because
it is the right thing to do – then they set about finding
ways to fund them. We taxpayers already pay far more than enough
to cover the costs of a free society – if our government wasn't
squandering our money in all the wrong places. The government is
the problem – not the financing.
