Halliburton Gouges Government in Gas DealDick Cheney's old company, Halliburton, which received an exclusive, open-ended, no-bid contract from Cheney's buddies in the White House, is gouging US taxpayers by overcharging for the fuel it imports to Iraq. Government documents show that Halliburton is charging twice as much for gasoline as other companies are charging. And US taxpayers are footing the bill! The company is charging the government $2.64 per gallon for the gasoline it imports from Kuwait, and $1.24 per gallon for gas imported from Turkey. The company sells the fuel in Iraq for 5 cents to 15 cents a gallon. The taxpayers are subsidizing the sale. The Pentagon's Defense Energy Support Center imports fuel from Kuwait for less than half what Halliburton is charging. Iraqi's state oil company is paying the same prices. Halliburton has already pocketed over $1.4 billion under the no-competition contract. This contract is illegal, under laws that require all government contracts to be posted and open to competitive bidding. The contract is under investigation, partly because Cheney is the former CEO of the company. |
